Our own vet Paul Freeman has just been awarded the European Diploma in Veterinary Neurology. This specialist Diploma is held in high regard within the veterinary profession and there are only 150 holders of this Diploma within Europe....
Paul’s  European Diploma recognises his specialism in Veterinary Neurology.

To gain this Diploma, a residency in neurology has to be completed as well as fulfilling several other criteria such as publishing a study and a case report in a recognised journal, completing a log of cases seen and attending conferences.

The residency itself can be 3 years full time at a university, but Paul completed this over a commitment of 6 years as a part-time study program with both Cambridge and Bristol Universities.   The study program ends with 7 lengthy examinations in order to attain the Diploma.

Paul commented, ‘It means I am entitled to call myself a specialist in neurology, although in reality it does not change the role I am performing here or during my continued position at Cambridge Vet School, very much.  Potentially it would allow me to work in other specialist centres throughout the world, and recently I was asked to see a couple of cases for a veterinary friend whilst visiting Mumbai in India!!

I am very proud to have achieved the Diploma after 8 years of hard work; it was a long slog but I hope it will be worth it!!’

Paul will continue to divide his time between working here and as a clinical neurologist working alongside the neurology team at Cambridge Vet School.   He heads our own referral team which accepts referral cases from many practices within Essex and some parts of Suffolk.
