Dermatology & Oncology

  Back

We run an in-house dermatology and oncology service.   Vet Stefaan van Pouke heads both these services

Dermatology

Stefaan obtained the RCVS Certificate in Veterinary Dermatology in 2000 and has been taking dermatology referrals since joining the practice in 2001. He has published several papers on this subject.

He is specialized in the diagnosis and treatment of skin, ear and nail diseases in dogs, cats and exotic animals. He is one of a few dermatologists in the UK experienced in treating skin diseases in horses. We have all the facilities required to investigate skin diseases, including intradermal testing for allergen-specific immunotherapy, cytology, histopathology, cultures and diagnostic imaging for investigation of ear diseases. Most cases require both immediate treatment and long term management rather than cure.

Oncology

Stefaan's masters degree in clinical oncology has allowed him to gain experience in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in dogs and cats. As with his dermatology cases he utilises our facilities, including digital radiography, ultrasonography, MRI scanning (first opinion) to allow an accurate diagnosis. Our own laboratory can analyse tissue samples and provide accurate results within minutes. If your pet has been diagnosed with cancer then we will spend considerable time explaining all the options (surgery, chemotherapy or a combination) allowing you to make the right decision. Most cases of cancer will need long term treatment rather than cure but our aim is always to ensure a good quality of life for your pet above everything else. A number of cancers will need chemotherapy and we have our own chemotherapy suite which allows us to administer these drugs safely.

Registered Veterinary Nurse Ellis Turner is our dedicated oncology nurse who will support you and your pet through the treatment, paying particular attention to quality of life issues such as freedom from pain, diet and exercise.
