Darcy’s Story 🩷 Courage, Care & a Happy Ending

Darcy, a 2-year-old cockerpoo, was admitted as an emergency after being attacked by another dog while out on a walk. She was in shock and required immediate stabilisation and further investigation of her injuries.

X rays revealed significant trauma to the left side of her chest rib fractures, and emphysema, indicating chest wall damage. Although Darcy remained clinically stable, the severity and nature of the injuries meant the full extent could not be determined without surgical exploration.

Darcy was taken to surgery for an exploratory thoracotomy. During the procedure, a penetrating wound to the left caudal lung lobe was identified. A left caudal lung lobectomy, surgical removal of the lung lobe, was performed successfully. A chest drain was placed to allow ongoing monitoring and management of the thoracic cavity, and the chest wall was carefully repaired. A second wound on the right side was explored and treated.

Post-operatively, Darcy required close monitoring, pain management, antibiotic therapy, and intensive nursing care while the chest drain remained in place. Despite the seriousness of her injuries and the complexity of the surgery, her recovery progressed steadily and without major complications.

Darcy spent several days in hospital before being discharged home, where she continued to recover well. She has since returned to normal activities, including walks and family life, and has been happily reunited with her canine companion.

Darcy’s case highlights the importance of prompt assessment, advanced imaging, surgical intervention, and ongoing post-operative care in managing severe thoracic trauma. Her calm nature and cooperation throughout treatment made her a deserving Pet Bravery Award nominee.
