Laparoscopic Spays

At Millennium Vets, we’re proud to offer laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery, a modern, minimally invasive alternative to traditional operations. Using a tiny camera and specialised instruments, our skilled vets perform procedures such as laparoscopic spays through just a few small incisions. This advanced technique means less pain, smaller wounds, and a quicker recovery for your pet — often returning to normal activity within 24–48 hours! 🐾

We’re committed to providing the highest standard of care and comfort, combining cutting-edge technology with expert surgical skill to ensure the best possible outcome for every patient. 💙

What is Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Spaying?

What is Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Spaying?

Laparoscopic spaying is a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses two small incisions (8-10mm) instead of a single, large one. A small endoscopic camera (laparoscope) is inserted through one incision to give the surgeon a clear view inside the abdomen, allowing them to carefully remove the ovaries using specialised instruments through the second incision. This results in less pain, a faster recovery, and minimal scarring compared to traditional spaying methods.

Why Choose Keyhole Spaying? Laparoscopic spaying offers several benefits over traditional open surgery:

✅ Less Pain & Faster Recovery – Smaller incisions mean less discomfort for your pet, reducing the need for pain medication and allowing for a quicker return to normal activities.

✅ Smaller Incisions & Minimal Scarring – The tiny keyhole incisions heal faster and leave behind minimal scars.

✅ Lower Risk of Infection – A smaller wound reduces exposure to bacteria, lowering the chance of post-surgical infections.

✅ Less Internal Trauma – Although traditional spaying is a routine surgery, it is still traumatic, requiring the surgeon to manipulate internal organs and put significant tension on the abdominal wall muscles, which contribute to post-operative pain. Performing the surgery laparoscopically reduces these factors, leading to a smoother recovery.

✅ Faster Return to Normal Life – Most pets recover within a few days, rather than weeks, and can resume normal activities much sooner.

Why is Laparoscopic Spaying More Expensive?

While laparoscopic spaying has many benefits, it does come at a higher cost than traditional surgery. Here’s why:

🔹 Specialist Equipment – The procedure requires advanced medical technology, including a high-definition laparoscope and precision surgical instruments. This equipment has to undergo regular servicing to ensure optimal functioning.
🔹Veterinary Expertise & Training – Vets performing laparoscopic surgery undergo additional training to master this minimally invasive technique.

🔹 Higher Surgical Standards – The use of specialised equipment and a sterile environment ensures the highest level of safety and precision.

Is Keyhole Spaying Right for My Dog?

Laparoscopic spaying is suitable for most healthy dogs. However, in some cases—such as pets with certain health conditions or those who are significantly overweight—traditional open surgery may be a better option. Our veterinary team will assess your pet’s health and advise on the best and safest option for their needs.

What do our clients say about their experience.

'it was minimally invasive and she recovered far better than expected. It was comforting to see how little impact it had on her life. The most awkward part of the whole process was remembering to unbutton her body stocking before letting her into the garden. The washing machine got a good workout for the first few days! ' Mazy Star a 4yr old Cocker Cross Labrador

'Very good, less invasive and ruby healed so well and quickly'. Ruby a 1yr old Cockerpoo

'It’s worth the extra cost for how much better the experience and recovery is for the dog'. Mochi 11month old Jug
