πΎ KC/UoC Respiratory Function Grading Scheme β January date πΎ
Weβre pleased to announce that Millennium Vets will be holding our next Kennel Club / University of Cambridge (KC/UoC) Respiratory Function Grading Scheme (RFGS) assessment on Wednesday 7th January at our Braintree practice. (Our next date will be the 4th March )
Assessments will be carried out by our Approved Assessor, Lindsey Nice BVetMed Cert SAS MRCVS.
Why is respiratory grading important?
Many brachycephalic breeds β including Bulldogs, Pugs and French Bulldogs β can suffer from a condition called BOAS (Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome). This can cause noisy breathing, exercise intolerance, overheating, and in severe cases, significant health and welfare concerns.
The KC/UoC Respiratory Function Grading Scheme provides a simple, non-invasive way of assessing a dogβs breathing. Each dog is given a grade from 0β3 based on their respiratory health:
- Grade 0: No evidence of breathing problems
- Grade 1: Mild signs, not currently affecting health or exercise tolerance
- Grade 2: Moderate signs β veterinary advice and potential treatment may be required
- Grade 3: Severe signs β veterinary intervention strongly recommended
For owners, this gives peace of mind and valuable guidance on how best to support their petβs health. For breeders, it helps make informed decisions to improve the welfare of future generations.
Did you know we can also treat BOAS here at the practice? Lindsey and Shaun are both experienced surgeons in this area and have a passion in helping these dogs.
