Protecting Rabbits Against the New Strain of VHD
Protecting Rabbits Against the New Strain of VHD
We want to make our rabbit-owning clients aware of an important health concern. Sadly, we have recently seen an increase in cases where rabbits have passed away suddenly, without showing any signs of illness beforehand. One possible cause is Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD) โ a highly contagious and often fatal virus.
What is VHD?
VHD affects rabbits of all ages and often causes sudden death with little or no warning. It is spread easily between rabbits through direct contact, contaminated environments, food, bedding, or even via people and clothing. Once contracted, the disease is almost always fatal.
Two Strains โ Two Vaccinations
There are currently two known strains of VHD (VHD1 and VHD2). Unfortunately, one vaccine alone does not protect against both. This means that two separate vaccinations are needed to give your rabbit full protection.
We are currently focusing on the newer strain (VHD2) during our vaccination days, as this has been linked to the recent increase in sudden deaths. Rabbits who are not fully vaccinated remain at risk.
How to Protect Your Rabbit
The good news is that vaccination is highly effective at protecting against both strains of VHD. If your rabbit has not yet received both vaccinations, we strongly recommend getting them booked in as soon as possible.
If you would like your rabbit vaccinated against both strains, please contact our team to be added to the waiting list.
