Giving tablets and other medication

Giving your cat medication can sometimes be a challenge, help is at hand - read on!

Administering Medication to Your pet

There are various types of medications that may be prescribed for your pet, including liquids, tablets, capsules, and topical treatments. The method of administration will depend on the specific medication prescribed. It is essential to carefully read the label and follow the instructions provided by your veterinary surgeon at all times.

Tablets and Capsules

If your pet’s medication is approved to be given with food, the simplest method is to conceal the tablet or capsule in a small amount of food or a favourite treat, such as chicken or cheese.

If your pet does not accept the medication in food, you may need to administer it directly. This can be done using your hand or a pill applicator (pill popper). Gently but at a fast pace, place the tablet at the back of the tongue, then hold the mouth closed and softly stroke the throat to encourage swallowing.

Liquid Medications

Where appropriate, liquid medications can also be mixed with a small amount of food. If your cat refuses this, the medication should be given directly using a syringe.

Insert the syringe gently into the side of the mouth (between the cheek and teeth) and slowly dispense the liquid. If the medication is to be given with food, it is advisable to allow your cat to eat first to help protect the stomach lining.

Topical Medications

Topical treatments should be applied directly to the affected area as instructed and allowed to absorb into the skin. Care should be taken to prevent your pet from licking the area, as this may reduce effectiveness or cause harm. In some cases, an Elizabethan collar (buster collar) may be recommended. Wearing gloves during application may also be advised.
