On the first Wednesday of each month, Vet Lindsey carries out assessments on brachycephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, French Bulldogs and Pugs. These breeds, and any others typically have a characteristic flat wide-shaped head and flat nose, which may make it more difficult for them to breathe; resulting in abnormal noisy breathing. This can also affect your dog’s ability to exercise, play, eat and even sleep. This can become a serious health issue for your dog.
During each consult, Lindsey assesses the pet for evidence of brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome and carries out Respiratory Function Grading where requested, as part of the Kennel Club’s Scheme. Lindsey is the Kennel Club’s assessor for the East of England region and holds her consulting sessions on the 1st Wednesday of each month.
The Kennel Club’s Respiratory Function Grading Scheme uses screening to help prevent the worsening of the condition through the next generation of pups and beyond. This is advised prior to any consideration of breeding for both male and female dogs.
If you have one of these breeds, we recommend they are examined and assessed. This can help determine, if any surgical intervention is required to widen their airway in the form of nose and throat surgery. This has the primary aim of helping them breathe more efficiently.
