Arthritis is a very common condition that affects humans as well as all animals.  Statistics show that 80% of dogs over the age of 8 years have arthritic changes in one or more joints.  The chronic pain that this causes can be debilitating and early detection and treatment to manage the arthritis, are the key to a improved quality of life and increased life expectancy. 

Arthritis is associated with old age, but the perception that it is 'normal' for their age needs to be challenged.  Treatment for the older generations of our human family who have arthritis is common place.  It may be old age but it can also be managed, with the ultimate aim of being pain free.  Animals of course can't talk or outwardly express their pain and discomfort, therefore signs of arthritis and veterinary diagnosis are important to give them supportive therapy and manage their condition.

Arthritic changes can not be reversed and management of each individual pet is different - depending on the severity of the arthritis and lifestyle -  and can include weight control, reviewing their nutritional needs, a change to the pets daily exercise routine and pain control.  Assessing your pets home environment can help a lot - putting mats down on on hard floors / a foot stool by the sofa or a ramp to get into the car are all examples of easy changes to improve your pet's quality of life at home.

Changes in your pets posture, how they move about, their physical appearance and behavioural changes can all be an indication of arthritis.  Vet Lindsey will discuss the affects of arthritis in detail, why we need to help our pets who live with chronic joint pain and the options available.
