Did you know high blood pressure or hypertension is harmful to cats just as it is in humans and can cause damage to the eyes, kidneys, heart and brain. Severe hypertension can cause blindness and other organs can be affected too. Early diagnosis and treatment has an important impact on your cat's quality of life.
Cats over the age of 7 years should have their blood pressure measured at least once a year.
Cats over the age of 7 years should have their blood pressure measured at least once a year.
Early diagnosis is key to fighting hypertension. Early treatment can prevent your cat from going blind due to high blood pressure. It is therefore recommended to measure blood pressure at least once a year in cats over 7 years of age and in cats suffering from kidney disease or hyperthyroid disease.
The only way to know if a cat's blood pressure is high is by measuring it. The equipment used to measure blood pressure is similar to that used routinely in people, with a small inflatable cuff placed around the cat's leg or tail.
Blood pressure monitoring is a painless and non-invasive procedure which is well tolerated in cats.
If your cat is diagnosed with hypertension your vet will discuss options about treatment and further monitoring. But treatment of high blood pressure is essential as it will prevent or limit potential damage to important organs. It will also improve the cat's quality of life and allow them to live a longer, healthier life.
